Semester ticket for public transport

Your Student ID card with integrated e-ticket (electronic student transportation pass)

As of summer semester 2019, the new Student ID card (campus card) with a new type of semester ticket will be introduced.

The present Student ID card with the semester sticker will be replaced by a new plastic card with an integrated semester ticket, the so-called “fahrcard” of the Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg (VBB) (transport association of Berlin-Brandenburg).

As of 1st April 2019, the present Student ID cards will no longer be valid. If you haven’t gotten your new Student ID card yet, simply order it here: studentcard.tu-berlin.de.

For our new students, the following applies: After your enrollment, you will receive an email giving you instructions to generate your Student ID card. If you have a German address, your Student ID card will be sent to you by mail. The integrated semester ticket will already be activated.

After completing a re-registration, the ticket on your Student ID card will be activated for the corresponding semester. So you no longer have to wait until you receive the semester sticker by mail. If you have been approved a waiver for the mandatory contribution for the semester ticket or if you want to end your enrollment at TU Berlin (exmatriculation/de-registration), the ticket will automatically be deactivated on the corresponding date. In these cases, it is therefore no longer necessary to give the semester ticket sticker back.

In case of loss, the semester ticket will automatically be deactivated as soon as a new Student ID card has been printed.

It is no longer necessary to carry a current enrollment certificate with you if your ticket is checked by the transport association.

The validity (semester period) will not be printed on the Student ID card. It is therefore not necessary for you to validate your Student ID card each semester, for ex. at a machine.

The validity of the Student ID card can either be read by a QR code or must be proven by a current enrollment certificate (recommended).

What’s the semester ticket?

The semester ticket is your pass for the public transportation services in Berlin (fare zones A, B and C). It is valid for one semester. The public transportation pass is integrated into the new Student ID (campus card incl. “fahrcard”).

Can I get a waiver from the "Semesterticket"?

Due to the current circumstances, an application for exemption from the semester ticket fee for the summer semester 2020 are to be submitted via a contact form (direct access code: 212841).

 The application via the contact form is only valid for the following reasons:

  • Degree program
  • Holiday semester
  • Registration

For other reasons you have to submit the form at the Semesterticket Office.

In exceptional cases, you can request a waiver for the mandatory contribution for the semester ticket in the Semesterticket Office. The Semesterticket Office is located together with the Student Union (AStA).
