Proof of Health Insurance
You will need to show proof of health insurance when enrolling if it is required in your notification of admission and you are not yet 30 years of age.
What does the proof look like?
Please only submit a current form called the “Versicherungsbescheinigung zur Vorlage bei der Hochschule” (Proof of insurance for submission to the university). Nearly every German statutory health insurance provider will issue you this form. It typically consists of three pages or sections. To enroll, you only need to submit the first page or section.
Waiver from the German statutory health insurance requirement for EU citizens
If you are a citizen of another European Union state, you can be waived from the German statutory health insurance requirement. If you have a form with the title “E 111” or a European Health Insurance Card, or if you have statutory health insurance in your home country, please go to any German statutory health insurance provider and obtain a waiver. This will change if you get employed or if you start a self-employment in Germany. In this case you have to be insured according the German law.
For non-EU citizens, the following applies:
If you have statutory or private health insurance in your home country or you have private or family health insurance in Germany, you can go to any German statutory health insurance provider to obtain a waiver.
If you have a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) from another European Union state, you can submit a copy for the enrollment.
Important information: The waiver cannot be rescinded; it applies for the entire duration of your studies in Germany.
What if my German health insurance is asking for the information, if my master's program is a consecutive or further educational program?
In section 23 of the Berliner Hochschulgesetz - BerlHG are two kinds of master's programs defined. There are consecutive or further educational master's programs (konsekutive und weiterbildende Masterstudiengänge).
Regularly, you will find the kind of your master's program in article 1 of the study and examination regulations of your program.
