ECTS Certificate for an application to a Master's program

Applicants from a university in EU for a Master’s program who at the close of the application deadline were not yet able to present a primary university degree, but who will soon be awarded their Bachelor’s degree, have the possibility of submitting a certificate from the responsible examination office/board of their former university. This possibillity is given under the condition that, the former university utilize the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).

This regulation is only valid for a Master's application to the 1st semester, not for a higher semester and for Bachelor’s students of German universities.

Such a certificate must contain:

  1. the achieved sum of ECTS performance points (only points from completed subjects/modules can be counted)
  2.  the provisional average grade
  3. the standard period of study or the maximum total sum of ECTS performance points, necessary to pass the Bachelor’s degree (must be clearly indicated in the certificate or other official documentation)

Generally an academic transcript showing subjects (modules), grades and credit points (officially certified copy) is necessary ; the only exception to this regulation is for holders of Bachelor’s degrees from the TU Berlin. They can submit a print of their QISPOS account incl. their Master's qualification, but if this Master's qualification is missing, the application wil be rejected.

The achieved sum of ECTS performance points and the provisional average grade are to be calculated by the former institution of higher learning. The ECTS performance point sums designated below must be substantiated.

For Master’s of Education in association with teaching qualifications (Lehramt), the Berlin Teachers’ Education Law (Berliner Lehrerbildungsgesetz) requires the Bachelor’s study program to have a total sum of 120 ECTS performance points in the major subject, minor subject, and vocational sciences (Berufswissenschaften), as well as a registration for a Bachelor’s thesis and a provisional average grade.

The performance points are based upon ECTS norms for all EU member states.
If you have been admitted, you will conditionally be enrolled for one semester and must prove the successful completion of the previous Bachelor’s study program together with re-registration for the second semester – at the latest –, otherwise you will be exmatriculated.

The transition from a non-completed first degree study program leading to a Diplom, Magister or Staatsexamen degree directly into a Master’s program is not possible.

Applicants for a Master’s program who at the close of the application deadline have neither presented a university degree, nor are able to provide the aforementioned documentation with a total sum of ECTS performance points, nor the provisional average grade calculated by the previous institution of higher learning must be rejected because of an incomplete application.
